We couldn't find a good guide to the High Country. So we’re building one.
The Mountain Ledger is a weekly newsletter and website covering the things worth knowing and doing in the High Country of North Carolina — Boone, Blowing Rock and the mountain communities surrounding them.
The idea is simple. The High Country is one of the most beautiful corners of North Carolina, and it deserves a publication that takes it seriously. Not a tourism brochure, not a listing aggregator — something that actually tells you where to eat, what's worth hiking, what's happening this weekend, and what's going on locally. The kind of thing you read because it's genuinely useful, and maybe a little enjoyable, too.
I’m Tony Mecia, a lifelong journalist who has been visiting the High Country for more than two decades. We own a place at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock and are here frequently throughout the year. I started the Mountain Ledger out of a straightforward frustration — my wife and I love this area but find it genuinely hard to find out what's happening and get a reliable read on events and things to do.
So why not build that? I’m happy to be working on this project with my son, Matthew, a college student at N.C. State. He’s helping with the researching, writing and more.
I also run The Charlotte Ledger, a local news publication that has served the Charlotte area since 2019 and grown to more than 27,000 subscribers with a full-time staff of four.
The Mountain Ledger brings the same commitment to accuracy, reliability, and genuine local focus to the High Country. Our reviews are based on firsthand visits. Our recommendations are honest. And if something isn't worth your time, we'll tell you that, too.
We send a weekly newsletter on Thursdays and post articles on our website.
Whether you live here year-round, own a second home in the mountains, visit every chance you get, or are just starting to fall in love with this part of North Carolina — the Mountain Ledger is for you.
Tell a friend! And drop us a line if you have any suggestions.
