Flat Top Mountain Fire Tower Hike | Moses Cone Estate, Blowing Rock
A rewarding summit hike with a historic fire tower and some of the best views in the High Country

There's something about hiking to a fire tower that never gets old. You work for the view, you climb the steps, and suddenly you're standing above the treeline looking out at a landscape that makes the effort feel completely worth it. The Flat Top Mountain hike at Moses Cone Estate delivers exactly that — and then some. It's one of the better half-day hikes in the High Country, accessible enough for most fitness levels but satisfying enough that you'll feel like you earned it.
The basics: Moses Cone Estate, Blue Ridge Parkway, Blowing Rock. Roughly 2.5 miles each way and is rated as “moderate.” Plan on about two hours round trip at a comfortable pace. Free to access as part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Parking at the Cone Manor trailhead.
What it is: Moses Cone Estate is a sprawling property managed by the National Park Service, and Flat Top Mountain is its signature hike. The trail winds through open meadows and hardwood forest before climbing steadily to the summit, where a historic fire lookout tower sits at the top with views that stretch across the Blue Ridge in every direction. Along the way you'll pass through a beautiful meadow clearing with a small cemetery — one of those unexpected moments that makes a hike feel like more than just exercise.

There’s a meadow about halfway up the mountain where dogs and humans can catch their breath. The cemetery is near the meadow.
What to do: Hike the full 2.5 miles to the summit and climb the fire tower. If you’re scared of heights, you’re not going to love climbing the stairs up to it, but the stunning views from the top are the whole point. (There are also beautiful overlooks before you get to the fire tower.) Take your time through the meadow clearing, and don't rush past the cemetery. The trail is well-marked and not technical, but the climb to the summit is steady enough that you'll want proper footwear. Bring water and give yourself more time than you think you need so you can linger at the top. If you start mid-morning, you could think about packing sandwiches and having a picnic.

Behold, in its glory, the fire tower at the top with 360-degree views of the mountains.
Good to know: Moses Cone Estate also connects to a network of carriage trails, so you can extend the outing if you have the legs for it. Bass Lake is accessible from the same property and makes a natural add-on — it's flat, easy, and pretty, a good warm-up before the Flat Top climb or a gentle cooldown after. (You could also drive from Bass Lake to the Moses Cone Estate to save your legs.) The estate sits right along the Blue Ridge Parkway, so the drive in is part of the experience. Go on a weekday if you can — weekends draw crowds, especially in fall foliage season.
The move: Start early, bring a snack, and plan to eat it at the top by the fire tower. The route has swichbacks so you can cut through and save some time if you have the legs for it. Pair it with a stop at Bass Lake on the way out, and you've got a full morning in one of the most scenic corners of the High Country. Treat yourself with an ice cream sandwich from Blue Deer in downtown Blowing Rock on the way out. You earned it!
