The Speckled Trout is the kind of place that makes Blowing Rock feel like a real town rather than just a tourist stop. It's been around long enough to earn genuine local loyalty, and it shows — in the way the staff works the room, in the regulars at the bar, in the fact that people keep recommending it without being asked. If you're only eating dinner once in Blowing Rock, this is probably where you want to be.

The Basics: It’s one of the best-known restaurants in Blowing Rock, right at the main intersection in downtown: 221 at Main Street. Entrees are around $20. Reservations recommended in summer — don't risk a walk-in on a weekend.

What it is: Easygoing, genuinely local and comfortable without being boring. It draws a good mix of regulars and visitors. The bar especially has real energy on Thursday nights, when they bring in live music — usually a guy on a guitar or banjo playing bluegrass or the classics (think “Wagon Wheel”). This is the spot most people end up recommending when someone asks where to eat in Blowing Rock, and it earns that reputation.

Pleasant Thursday night with wine and live music.

What to order: If the name of the restaurant has “trout” in it, you have to order the trout, right? The menu has six styles, and trout with almond and cornmeal is the standout — well-seasoned, well-executed and the dish you'll still be thinking about on the drive home. For sides, the pesto roasted potatoes are excellent, as are the squash with pumpkin seeds and corn and squash hash. The Brussels sprouts can run a little underdone, so that's the one place to temper expectations. Cocktails are solid ($16 range), and a glass of Chardonnay ($10-14) fits the room perfectly. There’s also a great selection of local beers.

Good to know: Thursday nights are lively with live music at the bar — great if you want some energy, but maybe not ideal if you're after a quiet dinner. There's a patio out front for fresh air. You’ll want a reservation in the summer (you can request high-tops in bar area or main dining room). Next door, they run an outfitters space where you can grab a casual beer and book fishing trips or outdoor excursions — worth knowing if you're planning time outside during your visit.

The Move: Go on a Thursday. Sit at the bar, order the trout and the roasted potatoes, and stay for the live music (6-8 p.m. on Thursdays; also 12-3 on Sundays). That's the full Speckled Trout experience right there — and it's hard to beat.

Laid-back vibe, great food, good selection of beers.
