Small upscale inn, restaurant and bar with one of the best mountain views in the area

There aren't many places in the High Country where you can sit down with a decent cocktail and look out at a view that genuinely stops you mid-sentence. Gideon Ridge is one of them. It's small, it's a little out of the way, and it feels like something you discovered rather than something you were told about — which is exactly the kind of place worth knowing.
The basics: It’s off U.S. 321 just outside Blowing Rock, as you start heading down the mountain toward Lenoir. Most people know it for its small, upscale restaurant with stunning views. Reserve ahead for dinner — its a memorable special-occasion spot — but the more economical move is stopping in for a drink at sunset.
What it is: A small inn and restaurant with one of the most stunning views in the area. It’s quiet, unhurried and genuinely upscale. It's the kind of place you go when you want the evening to slow down and feel a little special.

The intimate dining room offers amazing views.
What to order: The drink list is well-curated, the cocktails are good and the food is excellent — the menu changes, but entrees on their menu online include 6 oz beef tenderloin ($60), N.C. duck breast ($55) and halibut ($55). The view is honestly part of what you're ordering here — the layered blue hues of the Blue Ridge stretching out in front of you make whatever is in your glass taste better.

It looks like a postcard, but it’s the view from outside the entrance to Gideon Ridge Inn. Be sure to check it out before entering.
Good to know: Getting there takes a little navigation — it's off U.S. 321 and the approach is winding enough that you might second-guess yourself. Keep going. The parking on the side of a hill feels a little dicey, but there is valet parking. Sunset timing matters here, so plan your visit around the light and take some time savoring the view before you enter. The inn is small, and the dining room fills up fast, so if dinner is the plan, have reservations.
The move: You can enjoy the same scenery minus the Wagyu beef prices by stopping in for a drink. There’s a small bar area with the same spectacular views that has maybe 10 seats facing the large windows with the mountains behind them. It’s usually people awaiting their dinner tables, but you can get a glass of wine (around $16), grab one of the window seats and sip slowly. Don't rush it. That's the whole point of Gideon Ridge.
